It might be a cliché, but the ‘less is more mantra’ is legit. If spending more time at home has taught us anything, it’s that we accumulate a lot of stuff—too much stuff! And while ‘stuff’ can be fun, it can also rob you of space, both physical and mental. So, if you’re ready to adopt a more minimalist approach to your home (and life), get started with these easy tips!

1. Declutter

Ok, we know, we say this a lot. But, as professional organizers and de-clutterers, we’ve seen what a massive difference getting rid of stuff makes! Now, this isn’t about tearing you from items you really enjoy, it’s about getting rid of the stuff that evokes a large “meh” when you see it. Old clothes? Donate. That questionable painting your aunt Deb did in her artiste phase? Chuck it. You’ll be amazed at how much room you have afterwards!

2. Let every room have a focal point
Having too much going on—whether that be color schemes, decorations, plants, furniture styles—means that your decorative integrity gets muddled. Also, an overwhelming space has been proven to have a negative effect on mental health. For each room, let there be one or two cohesive focal points to really allow your aesthetic to shine.

3. Use space to your advantage

Just because you have a room, it doesn’t mean you have to fill the four walls up to the brim. Take advantage of open-plan rooms with strategically placed, functional furniture. Arches instead of doors and big windows expand your space beautifully.

4. “Less” is a state of mind
Usually, our internal circumstances inform our external ones. Getting rid of unnecessary clutter will free more space in your mind. Because, let’s face it, we have enough going on in our brains on a daily basis—let your home be your minimal, zen sanctuary.
